Preventing Recovery from Updating Throughout the Day

Athlytic calculates your Recovery score based on your overnight HRV and Resting Heart Rate (RHR). To ensure that Recovery is set properly after you wake up and does not update throughout the day, follow these steps.

Step 1: Enable Athlytic to Save Resting Heart Rate (RHR) from Sleep

Since Apple continuously updates RHR throughout the day, Athlytic has a feature that saves one RHR sample from sleep to ensure Recovery does not update after waking up.

How to Enable Athlytic to Save RHR from Sleep

  1. Open Athlytic.
  2. Go to the More tab → Recovery Preferences.
  3. Enable “Enable Athlytic to Save Resting Heart Rates”.

Grant Athlytic Permission to Write RHR in Apple Health

  1. Open Apple Health on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Sharing AppsAthlytic.
  3. Ensure Resting Heart Rate is enabled for “Write” permissions.

Verify That Athlytic is Writing RHR into Apple Health

  1. Open Apple Health.
  2. Tap BrowseHeartResting Heart Rate.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Show All Data.
  4. You should see both an Apple RHR sample and an Athlytic RHR sample.

If Athlytic isn’t saving RHR samples, try toggling “Enable Athlytic to Save Resting Heart Rates” OFF and ON in Recovery Customization. This often resolves the issue.

Understanding RHR Differences in Athlytic vs. Apple Health Vitals

RHR in Athlytic is your average RHR during sleep and does not include times when you are awake.

RHR in Apple Health Vitals appears to be an overnight RHR, but Apple may include RHR readings taken while awake.

Step 2: Ensure Your Sleep Data is Being Recorded in Apple Health

Athlytic requires sleep data to isolate HRV from sleep and prevent Recovery from updating throughout the day.

How to Verify Your Sleep Data in Apple Health

  1. Open Apple Health (white icon with a red heart).
  2. Tap BrowseSleep.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Show All Data.
  4. Ensure you have sleep stage samples (REM, Core, Deep).

Important: Do not rely on Apple Health’s Sleep Chart, as it does not show all raw sleep data. If no sleep samples exist, Athlytic cannot isolate Recovery HRV to your sleep, and Recovery will update throughout the day with each new HRV sample.

Step 3: Ensure You Have HRV During Sleep or Use a Morning Mindfulness Session

Athlytic requires an overnight HRV reading or a Mindfulness App Breathe session (before noon) to calculate Recovery.

How to Verify Your HRV Data in Apple Health

  1. Open Apple Health.
  2. Tap BrowseHeartHeart Rate Variability (HRV).
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Show All Data.
  4. Confirm that you have HRV readings during sleep or a Mindfulness session before noon.

Ensure Sleep HRV is Prioritized in Athlytic

  1. Open Athlytic.
  2. Go to Settings → Recovery Customization.
  3. Ensure Prioritize Sleep or Mindfulness HRV is turned ON (default setting).

If HRV is missing from Apple Health, Recovery will update all day instead of being locked after sleep.

Step 4: Enable Background App Refresh for Athlytic

To ensure Athlytic processes your data correctly after waking up, Background App Refresh must be enabled.

How to Enable Background App Refresh

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap GeneralBackground App Refresh.
  3. Ensure Background App Refresh is ON at the top.
  4. Scroll down and make sure Athlytic is toggled ON.

Step 5: Ensure Apple Sleep Tracking is Set Up Correctly

To enable Apple’s native Sleep Tracking:

  1. Follow Apple’s official guide: Set Up Sleep Tracking on Apple Watch.
  2. Ensure your Apple Watch is worn consistently during sleep.
  3. After waking up, turn off Sleep Mode manually (especially if you wake up before your alarm).

Step 6: Check for False Sleep Samples from Other Apps

If Recovery updates unexpectedly in the evening, a third-party sleep app (like AutoSleep or Pillow) may have saved false sleep samples in Apple Health.

How to Check for Incorrect Sleep Samples

  1. Open Apple Health.
  2. Tap BrowseSleep.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Show All Data.
  4. Look for evening sleep entries that may not be accurate.

If you find false sleep samples, deleting them should prevent Recovery from recalculating based on incorrect data.
