Why Is My Sleep Labeled as a Nap in Athlytic?

Athlytic tracks sleep stages (Core, Deep, REM) using Apple Watch data from WatchOS 9 and later. However, Apple labels sleep that is not assigned a sleep stage as ‘asleep’, which Athlytic uses to track naps.

If part of your main sleep period was labeled as ‘asleep’ instead of Core, Deep, or REM, Athlytic may have categorized it as a nap instead of your core sleep.

How to Check If This Happened

To verify if Apple incorrectly labeled part of your sleep as ‘asleep’:

  1. Open Apple Health.
  2. Tap BrowseSleep.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Show All Data.
  4. Look for ‘asleep’ samples recorded during your main sleep period.

How to Fix Sleep Being Labeled as a Nap

If you find that part of your main sleep period was labeled as ‘asleep’, you can manually correct it in Apple Health:

  1. In Apple Health → Sleep, find the incorrect ‘asleep’ sample.
  2. Swipe right to delete the incorrect ‘asleep’ entry.
  3. Go back to the Sleep screen and tap Add Data.
  4. Manually re-add the sleep session and label it as ‘core’ sleep instead of a nap.

Athlytic does check if an ‘asleep’ sample is within an hour of sleep stages to count it as core sleep, but if it’s more than an hour apart, it may label it as a nap.

How Athlytic Detects Naps

  • Athlytic tracks naps using Apple’s ‘asleep’ data from Apple Watch.
  • The Apple Watch only records naps that are at least one hour long.
  • If a nap is detected, a Nap card will appear above your sleep stages card in Athlytic.
  • Short naps (e.g., 20 minutes) may not be detected since Apple does not always track them.
